    One thing for sure is to turn the car on, and let it idle until it's up to temp. Then give it some gas, that should uncover any oil or coolant burns.

    Since things vary from state to state (and cop to cop, but you can't do anything about that...:nono: ) I'd recommend contacting your local DMV, County courthouse, or police station and see what they say.

    Electric vs. Mech gauges.

    It all depends on the type of gauge. Usually things like Oil Pressure and Water Temp, electric is preferred, but things like Boost/Vacuum, mechanical is more common.
