Like everyone else here, I think the mkiii seats are AMAZINGLY comfortable. And they're even 15-20 years old. I'm amazed newer car seats aren't as comfortable. CRE, I'll go halfsies with ya to try that memory foam idea ;)

I think he may have come close to proving himself. That's certainly a good improvement from a stock N/A.

If the bellhousing is different, couldn't you just take the one from a mkIII off and put it on the mkii w58?

My vote is for a bad master. Something is not allowing the pads to squeeze. First fluid hits master, then through booster to lines to calipers. I'f you're not losing any fluid AND the pedal goes to the floor, I'd be nearly positive you've got a brake master issue. I've dealt with the brake...

Teach him why everything is needed. Why the oil must be checked and present, why the coolant must be there as well. He clearly enjoys learning, so teach him rather than tell him to check random things.
