If there is a vacuum leak in that area, the carb cleaner will get sucked into it, and burned in the engine, raising the idle... If there is no leak, the idle will not change.
Run the engine and spray carb cleaner all over that area, and see if the idle changes.
Even if that isn't the problem, (which I think it probably is) you still need some kind of gasket there.
Well, my car did exactly what he is describing after I replaced my head gasket, it would barely idle, the only way you could get it to run, was to hold down the gas pedal... We at first thought it was a timing issue...but it turned out to be a HUGE vacuum leak...it turns out I forgot the scrape...
Tach doesn't move while cranking? Sounds like CPS.
You don't need a "code reader" to check codes, all you need is a paper clip. Codes are the only way the car can tell you what's wrong with it...just count the blinks of the check engine light, here...
You don't HAVE to have a timing light to get it running. I drove mine for a while with it just set at 0'. It will run. I think you have another problem. Does the engine make any strange noises?
