Why not make a thicker adapter plate instead of using washers leaving a space in between the tranny and engine?

It's not that drastic as you state. I havent had one since 1995. I NEVER have a over heating problem. I run an electric fan running off of a temp sensor, which means my fan isn't always on. Something is making it over heat and you havent found the problem yet Getting an under cover will help...

I don't have an underciver with my electric fans at all , and I have excellent cooling. You have another problem such as air in the cooling system, or a loose connection some where. You may even have a blown HG.
