I've done several aftermarket cores without any issues at all. My advice is don't use OEM coolant with them and always pressure test the system before putting the dash back in.
Hopefully most owners don't lock their doors with the key in the ignition. Stuff happens though, which is why Toyota put it in there. Btw good to see you're still around.

That question indicates you shouldn't be mucking with AC at all but to answer it either service port can be used with the proper technique. In your case use the port on the compressor and charge with vapor. Refer to the TSRM for details.
I do remember and yours wasn't the first case I'd seen when it happened.
