It's a near enough thing Pete and will give a "safe" end gap with either, it used to be the other way around with the larger gap on the top ring but with modern thin rings they tend to flutter as you get a cushion of gas between the rings so now you use a larger gap on the second ring so it can...
3 inch bore engine will need 12 thou end gap on the top ring 15 thou on the 2nd ring. (3 x 1 inch @ 4 thou = 12 thou)
This is an age old formula that my Father taught me 35 years ago, as I said for high output engines I add a couple of thou as they can close the end gap if ran hard/hot/lean.
Older motors have screw in plugs newer ones have pressed in for those two, could have added NWS to the thread title for the "Goon Head Shot" ;)
(not gonna sleep well tonight having seen that unprepared)
mmm HardTop goodness!
<minijealous>
Seperated at birth?
Just take him beer without asking he'll be over the moon!
(just means next time you need something done he'll be happy to help you out, trust me it makes a huge difference to attitude) :)
bzzzzzz wrong the bore diameter has EVERYTHING to do with the end gaps :D
4 thou per inch of bore top and 5 thou per inch 2nd.
If you're going to run it hard at high boost I suggest adding 2>3 thou to the total to prevent it nipping up.
But what's the timing doing during all this?
My point is why spend xxx$$$ and XXXhours building an engine then try to increase the power before getting it tuned if there's even a minute chance of it failing?
None of these kids are big budget I'd expect them to be a little more cautious but...
Dunno I'm not a drag racer I just know my rebuilt 58 started showing signs of distress at very low power so I swapped it out before it self destructed!
I'm sure one of the guys that races can answer your question though.
Mine is in the DP 5>10" from the Turbo, it will read about 100c lower BUT if the probe fails and breaks off it WON'T take out the turbine wheel.
EGT's are a little slow to respond so unless you have 6 probes they're not much help as a tuning tool but do help highlight "trends" if you monitor it.
