Check the old core before binning it, often the actual core is fine and it's leaking at the V seam in the tank and it's an easy fix for a rad shop, mine was like $20 to repair.

To find the best you need to raise the slide valve, cap off the outlet then fill it with uncooked rice, the one that holds the most is by definition "the best".
My GE Alt finally gave up the ghost after a few years of being spun to 8500rpm, I think at the time I calculated 14000+ rpm at the alternator, it had very very worn brushes, no commutator left and grumbly bearings.

If you're really freaked out you could grab a can of the GM headbolt sealer and test it on a corner of the gasket to see if it's compatible with the Toyota goo, leave it sit a couple of hours if it doesn't bubble up/turn to slime you could then give around the water and oil...
"Should" be fine to use as is Colin, if it can't seal the imperfections nothing else you do will have any chance.
Main area of concern is under the fire rings as that's where most leaking HG's start.
Can't see how that happens as the system pressure is a constant, maybe if the flow is reduced to a trickle and there is a hot spot it might cavitate and boil the coolant in that area.....
Can't see any reason not to use one!
I was thinking more along the lines of something easily programmable like a PCS so you can tailor it to suit the circuit, not sure how the BMW trans works but if it's solenoids it's not that hard to set up as the PCS can handle 6 forward gears.
