i like to tie open the heater VSV, remove the thermistat and shove a garden hose into the upper radiator hose, and flush EVERYTHING through the motor.

tight is good, but for most things you dont really have to gurilla them on there. just tighten in down, you should be able to feel whats tight enough.

as for that last pic, the circled area on the LEFT you DO NOT block off. you put the second block off plate over the open hole on the UPPER intake mani.

youre not talking about the two vacuum nipples for the charcole vsv and the egr actuator are you? if you connect your boost gauge to that you will read 0 psi at idle.

just took a ride in 91redsupra's car, he just finished replacing the HG (3rd time now) with a rebuilt head, ported and polished exhaust and man that thing is nice. really makes me get motivated to get my car running again. the only thing that is holding me back is a damn socket for the NA...
