I bet it helps that I took mine apart to clean it, but it was real easy to put it back together.
Keep experimenting with the spring, it only goes on one way.
I believe there's supposed to be an "E" clip on the other end of the rod passing through to keep it all together.

I never had a reliability concern with my Supra.
Drove it up around VT for a day, 8 or 10 consecutive hours of driving and the only problem was I got a flat, and didn't have my spare :(

I bought a Subaru Legacy for a reason. Supra's need backups!
Volvo's are pretty reliable, and for the price (free) you can't complain. Drive that while you save up to buy a supra.
Or drop a built 7M into it... maybe Clip's onto something ;)

What I was saying is that you don't need to remove, or even loosen that pivot bolt to loosen tension on the belt. Prybar. Give it a little tug, taking caution to what you're prying on.
