Lift the engine or drop the subframe and use a GTE pan! Otherwise, you stand the risk of slag getting in the pan somehow, or shavings ending up in there. I'd remove the pan to put the flange on, or remove the pan to replace with a GTE pan.

JJ is teh man when it comes to oil. BTW JJ: Finally changed the oil in my subie, used that gallon of Mobil Delvac1 5w40 that i had, and it's so much better... hard to explain, but on the first drive after the change, did it at work, and kinda forgot that i did it... it was so busy that day...
