i got lucky on the ECU repair. My step-fathers friend at work said he could do the work on the board. The guy normally Builds / Solders, repairs and installs Cuircut boards for Jet Aircraft at bombardier and has been doing it for 35 years :) I think he knows what he's doing.

The Alternator for a 93-94 Lexus SC300 is a perfect match and is higher amperage i belive. it has been said it's only $100 at the dealer!

Go to the guys at RCTS ( http://www.monsterhorsepower.com/ )they can do the HKS V-Pro and already have Maps made up for it, it is also plug and play for the 1J Harness, They are located in Calgary, i know it's probably not any closer for you, i am sure they could offer you help over the phone...

I know that the car manufacturer TVR has a 4L I6 Engine, not sure if you can put it in our cars but i know stock N/A it puts down around 400BHP
Its not so much that everyone prefers the 1J over the 2J
my choice of the 1J is for a few reasons,
-it is made to fit in our cars
-it is much easier to install for a novice (such as my self)
-requires less wiring work to make it work
-cost less money to put together and have a running 1J car...

forgot to mention it is fine to use synthetic in your turbo motor, from what i understand using a proper synthetic is better for your turbo motor then a natural oil.
