First start with known problems (radiator). Then go with the easy possibilities, burp your system and if its still going on take your thermostat out and test it. Boil some water to the thermostat temp on your stovetop and see if the bitch opens.

The best place for a happy medium of life and accurate readings would be at the bend in the pipe where its near vertical more towards the bottom. That is where i would recommend. I put mine at the very begining of the horizontal part of the dp.

Same here... im about an hour from Seattle but i find myself driving up there at midnight-2am just to see the city skyline here in the fall. I can pull right up to quest field and no other cars anywhere around me.
