Are they all the came colors?
Any rust in the cracked areas suggesting a past fracture?
Johnathan: The reason you got better mileage is because your thermo clutch fan is not engaging properly..(less resistance to the motor)
I guess it is debatable if the fan shroud is needed, (not so much when driving) But if your into maintaining an even temp while sitting in gridlock traffic...

Maybe stop into an auto shop and they can pressurize the system for you real quick to see if it leaks. It may only leak when it's up to temp/pressure, My guess is it will start leaking again..Take...
When the pump starts to fail or leak, Coolant will slip past the water pump shaft seals and run out the "weep" hole under the housing...
Is it wet at that hole. any leaks or drips at the hole?
If so, replace the water pump..

Look at the weep hole at the bottom side of the water pump and see if it leaks from there. There is a small 1/4 inch hole that lets you know it time to replace the pump when it leaks..
