My teacher just wasn't very good at teaching. I had to go to the engineering tutoring sessions but even that wasn't enough since I wasn't getting any good foundations of the concept in class.

I don't know, man. Some boost controllers have a button to switch from external to internal, some have a set of switches. I haven't used an AVCR before but every EBC I've used so far needs to know if you're using external or internal gate. Read the manual... That's why I asked.
