You can pay dyno time every time you make a modification to see what gains you may have made or you can use your own accelerometer every time you make any modification and get an idea of your gains. It's just another tool.

This thread has some good information - Helicoil, in car - as well as where to get the kit for $31. Out of the car is obviously the easiest time to do it but it can be done in car.

And that is what it is used for. You don't compare it's hp/tq results a dyno as you don't compare a Mustang dyno to a Dynojet... Use it to see the gains in mods, or go pay to dyno, go make mods, go pay to dyno again, but be sure it is the same kind of dyno.
