USDM 89+ tails have a slightly lighter center section than the left/right lenses...not sure why. The difference is especially apparent in direct sunlight. JDM 89+ tails are much closer in color, and are a bit darker overall. See my sig.

It's what was popular, and perceived as "cool and stylish" at the time (mid-80's)...I don't think they look so bad. And to the original poster: I don't really think those wheels compliment the MK3's styling...they look a bit like an onion blossom to me, curvy wheels + angular car don't mix...
