Because if you don't the computer will play with the timing as it sees fit, and you will never get it timed correctly. Jumping the plugs, "disables" the computer somewhat so you can set the base timing. My descrption is not very techincal but, I think you get the idea.

Do a search of Supraforums. There is a thread over there with the writeup of exactly what to do. It used to be on here pre-hack.

Yeah, sounds like you got it hooked up correctly, but also, did you change the settings in the CMOS? (I think that is what it is still called) Sometimes that can affect things. So with both HDD's in the Emachine, no booty? I'd check the CMOS. When you boot it up doesn't say somehting...
