i had a starter from my 87 fit to my 1j just two weeks ago, it was a tighter fit but it fit after moving it around a bit.

check the map sensor as well, if you can borrow a ecu just make sure it might be a good idea. what do your plugs look like, what gap and type of plugs are you using?

did you do the 12v mod or are you running the stock relay and resister?

try to recalibrate it and see if that works, thats why i went with the innovate lc1/xd16. i have had mine for two years and many friends have had theres even longer:) but it is a good idea to recalibrate it after the first 3 month and then every six months.
