You dont want to take off too much because just like Sl1dewaysSupra said you are just asking for problems. If I were you I would just try and stay within the stock compression. Are you planning on putting a stock HG or a metal HG?
Did you check the one wire that goes to the starter. iirc it is brown. Also make sure that you dont have any loose connections in the positive wire. Hope this helps.

The part you are talking about is by the fan motor and is on the heater/cooling box on the passinger side. It has one screw and has one plug(5 wires iirc). Also it is not that expensive from toyota. like $20something iirc.

I would check the rear 90degree rubber coolant hose. Its located on the passingerside and the hose runs from the rear of the cylinder head to a metal pipe on the block. Hoes this helps you out.
I would also say that you might have a short some where in the wiring. Maybe you should try and repair yours and see if it works good after that or else if it does not work out then I would replace it.
