did you use a blown headgasket tester? and its rusty right now? no leaks + missing oil = good chance its going in the coolant

bad cat could also cause these i believe / blocked exhaust

you can put the torque converter on but it doesnt mean you put it on right.. if you dont put it on right it will stick out a bit. dont force it too hard or you'll start breaking the tranny braces to the engine or worse break your bellhousing... read the TSRM there is a right way to put it on...
