I did something similar once, the throttle cable broke on a VW Karman Ghia I had so I fished it out through the truck, wrapped it in a rag and drove home with it in my left hand controlling the gas.... talk about hand eye coordination, time the shift for traffic, let up on throttle with left...
imho, don't bump it up at all, because you don't have the funds to deal with it when it blows or has bhg or other issue and I just can't stand seeing another one bite the dust due to neglect..... just keep it as is and you'll get lots of reliable miles, save your $$ and do other upkeep things...
