I wonder where the guy who built that site got his numbers for the density range of gasoline. I bothered to look it up in one of my books and got 7.4 lb/gal for premium unleaded (Forced Induction Performance Tuning by A. Graham Bell, 2002). When I checked the physics hypertextbook online I got...
You said you had a 3" exhaust, is that cat back or turbo back? If it's cat back invest in a good downpipe like a BIC that deletes the O2 housing on the back of the turbo or a 3" downpipe and a 3" O2 housing from John Lunsford. Hard pipes are a solid investment, our pipe routing sucks and it's 17...
Water cooling isn't going to show up very well in a relative cool dyno cell with limited airflow over the water unless you're seriously overworking the intercooler. If you heated your dyno cell up to 105* and ran your turbo at the upper limits of its efficiency on a small intercooler you'd see a...
I've got an opinion, just no real experience with turning high RPM with the 7M. I've put together a few high RPM V8's and a 4G63 so I'm not totally in the dark, I just don't have much experience with the 7M. I'm probably not going to tell you anything new but I'll happily throw my opinion out...
You can rebuild your engine with $4000, the only catch is finding a machine shop that is willing to put the extra work in that the 7M requires. The tolerances that many V8 engines will accept are too loose for the 7M.
You're probably going to write me off as an asshole for what I'm about to...
I wouldn't buy it; a car that requires that much work has been neglected and a 17 year old sports car that hasn't been maintained is a money pit. The Mk3 is so undervalued that it's much cheaper to find a car in better condition.
I think you misunderstood me, it's going to sit until I have to drive it the 200 miles and back again. I don't really expect it to make it back home again, hence the "see how long this 7M will go on a bad rod bearing" statement. As of right now I'm on my mountain bike, the supra is parked.
Thanks for the advice guys. I'm going to switch to 50 weight and see how long this 7M will go on a bad rod bearing. When the summer ends I should be dropping in another 7M-GTE
That really sucks but it provides an important lesson. Always have a BC fire extinguisher in your car! Preferably a halotron 1 or a CO2 extinguisher, the powder BC makes one hell of a mess.
I managed to starve a rod bearing on a canyon road near my house. To anyone who routinely drives a canyon road with high speed supers buy an accusump! There was 5 qts of oil in the engine at the time but I had kept the engine at high RPM for a while so I don't know how much was in the pan. My...
It really depends on your climate. If you routinely operate your vehicle in freezing conditions you should run thinner oil. If you live in the desert you should be looking at thicker oil. Personally I use 10-40 in the winter and 20-50 in the summer but I live in central California.
