Jim, If the timing control for the maft pro is intercepting and adjusting the cam sensor signal on the 7m, It will work on the 1j because they use the same signals/configuration. However, output from the ecu will be different between the two. I agree, I think you are in standalone territory.

Where did you hook up your ground and power wires the first time? Were they on the ecu or elsewhere?

Here is my pinout for the early ecu. I don't know how much use it will be to you, but maybe it will help.

Also check for boost leaks. If you have one, the the turbo will overspool and the engine would run really rich under boost. That would cause gas to be expelled into the exhaust. Boom! Still change the gas.:3d_frown:
