Then yes re-do your timing. Aline all timing marks. Make sure cam gears are in the center pug hole. Pull cps cover off and make sure it looks like this

IIRC no more then .003" warpage.
But Im sure you already know and how small that is. Also Im sure you had a machinist edge to check it with, and just couldn't think of the name of it since you called it a "metal straight edge". Just wanted to check.
Did you happen to check you flanges ( for straightness ) on your intake manifold before putting everything back together?
I speak form personal experience, if there not true, they can and will leak, and will act pretty much like a huge vacuum leak.

Make sure the bolt you use isn't to long other wise you will bottom it out and it will be a bad start to a long bad day.

As for the No, NC, and com. it refers to where the "valve" is in its normal position / no power going to it.
Open or closed depends on what port and common is what it is connected to in the valve ( kind of like the source). Almost like a light switch, light off = closed, not...
NC = normally closed
NO = normally open
Com = common
As the solenoid think of this, Air goes "IN" then has to come back "OUT" to the new level you set.
