    MickyG's MX-73 to 7M-GE Swap

Couple of quick observations as a result of all this: ACIS is bizarre! The butterfly splits the plenum in two and nothing else. When open, the air comes in through the y-pipe and fills the plenum. When closed, the plenum is now two chambers and air comes through the y-pipe exactly the same...

    MickyG's MX-73 to 7M-GE Swap

This Weekend Managed to accomplish a fair bit this time around! Cleaned intake components (throttle body, y-pipe, plenum) Did a test fit of the 5M's throttle linkage (not going to work without modification) Finished cleaning the head Hand lapped all intake valves to a rough state Finished...

    MickyG's MX-73 to 7M-GE Swap

Today: Threw a quick temp stand together to allow me to pull the motor off the real one, so I could get the rear main seal retainer attached correctly. Trust me, you don't want to know what that looked like, but it did the job! Rear main retainer and seal now installed and engine back on...

    Allans White Supra

Very true! Just didn't want to deal with the whole "shorten driveshaft" and "change front section of driveshaft" route if I didn't have to. You and Ian have told me on several occasions that it's not hard though. Might have to look into that a bit more...

    Allans White Supra

Hmmm. Very interested in how this turns out. Allan, that link you provided, does that apply to all Toyota ECT or just a certain date on? I'm wondering if the A43DE is set up the same way. I know the MX-73 had that one for a year or two and then went with the newer A34x from 87 onward (if I...

Looks like full VDO elec oil pressure gauge set will run me less than $100 from my friends next door! Thanks IJ for setting me straight on thread size for the sender (I PM'd him in desperation). I was searching for BSP here and of course 3 characters is too few to do a search. Before I was...

    MickyG's MX-73 to 7M-GE Swap

The radiator shop next door to work (same building actually) has an account with all the local auto parts stores so that might work. They used to be a VDO reseller and have a few electric gauges still laying around. One of 'em is an oil pressure gauge - go figure! I can get that for next to...

    MickyG's MX-73 to 7M-GE Swap

That's about $30 cheaper than what Repco quoted me but still not proportional to what I've seen in US dollars. But then again, there's always shipping to factor in. Guess I'll just have to deal with it!

    MickyG's MX-73 to 7M-GE Swap

Adjuster: Thanks a ton for the info there! I think it's safe to say that I'll be staying away from blasting the head. So far, I've just done the rear and bottom timing covers, rear main seal retainer, thermostat housing, and the housing that the thermo housing bolts to (that just sounded...

    MickyG's MX-73 to 7M-GE Swap

I popped into the local autoparts store this morning to price up some oil gauges (electrical gauge + appropriate sender). Man, this stuff is crazy expensive! Close to $200 for one stupid gauge! Contrast that with $60-$90 for suggested retail back in the states. I don't get it! Any fellow...

    MickyG's MX-73 to 7M-GE Swap

Thanks guys! Allan: Yeah, the head's already been surfaced so the old gasket trick sounds like a good idea. Mik: OT never hurt anyone! And besides, there's always a chance it'll lead to some insight into the bigger picture.

    MickyG's MX-73 to 7M-GE Swap

Sounds like sagely advise. No need for me to further debate then. Next question then is whether scratches from brass bristled brushes on a drill are something to worry about. I did one combustion chamber tonight and the results weren't all that confidence inspiring. It's not exactly gouged...

I was thinking of covering them up with something to keep the sand out. Still not advisable?

    MickyG's MX-73 to 7M-GE Swap

Started working on cleaning the head up. Still a lot of carbon to deal with that the first cleaning didn't get. Based on how gross, time consuming, potentially damaging (brass brush > aluminum) this is going to be, I had a thought. Is it possible to bead blast the head? I know there are...

My BIGGEST project ever... lots of pain and lots of pics lol

Actually, I think you'll find that's Castrol oil in 1 quart quantities. I don't think you can buy coolant in that small a size in the States - most of the stuff I bought was a gallon.

No need to comment on the oil gauge question - got a solution in mind. I forgot there are numerous ports on the main oil galley that I can use for a secondary sender/gauge.

Finally its kinda sorta coming together....

Is it really easier to get a 1J than a 7M? That's quite surprising.

    MickyG's MX-73 to 7M-GE Swap

Progress: Not a whole lot to report (again). Picked up my rear seal bracket gasket and 5 new bolts so I'm ready to reassemble things on the outside of the bottom end now - should be exciting (for me at least!). Spent last night repairing a friend's '92 scamry - dead motor mounts front and...
