yes you can run high compresion on 7m (like Gena's red car) but the motor has to be built very well. lower cr is much safer and you can make it up by only couple pounds of boost
it is fairly easy. take it appart. take of speedo gauge. then use very small flat srewdriver (like eyeglass tool one) to separate tubes with numbering on them. the point is that there is teeth inside and you need to separate it enough so it can spin freely.

to get over 550rwhp on 1j you need lots more money than 7m (clip 2000+, harness extension, instalation). also single kits for 1j tend to be more expencive than 7m (because you can get t4 adapter for 7m ($100) + nice...
if you will be runing 550s you dont usualy need afpr because most mk3 runs pig ritch anyways. everyone buys fpr and turns is all the way down. now if you have 440 + lex fpr is necesity. i an runing close to 500hp on stock fpr and af is great

i think it is better to get universal 3" k&n and then fab up custom cold air piping from crx ebay kit it will run you ~$60 for averything but should give better performance
