You can rev the 1JZ higher than a 2JZ. It's just .5 liters, and there are guys busting 600RWHP with older T88's. Sure they don't spool until 5,000 RPMs, but you will be shifting at 9,000.... plenty of powerband. Very doable with the above selected turbo, especially if you went ball bearing...

Did you replace the timing belt? Inspect the tensioner?

The IS300 union bolt may be cheaper than a sandwitch plate. I'm not 100%, but it works the same. The sandwitch just gives you more sensor/feed options, but if you're going single, union bolt. A search on www.clubna-t.com may yield excellent results on that topic ;)
