The problem was in fact some sort of engine noise. It went away when I drained the RP and switched to Penzoil Plat. With the Penzoil, the motor quieted right back down again. I've put another 200 miles on it since the oil change with no problems. < shrug > :icon_conf

The computers at autozone and other places call for the bosch as the replacement plug. The counter person probably doesn't know any better, and usually doesn't make commission.
