Hey everyone! well this will be the first time im doing any wrench work on a Supra and looking through these other build-ups/rebuilds it seems i have my work cut out for me. Recently i purchased an 89 NA 5 speed targa shell for $100. It had no motor, transmission, front seats, minor rust in the spare tire well and over the pass side rear fender well, and faded/chipped clear coat. other than that this car is in amazing shape, brand new tires, MINT interior minus a gauge cluster and the rear seat backs, which unfortunately cracked.

Shortly after i found another local supra for $700 in the Wantad. Its an 87 turbo 5 speed targa. he parked it because it couldnt pass emissions. it sat for a while and the interior is absolute CRAP. the previous owner decided to spray adhesive on everything and try to "reupholster" it in purplish suede. so i cant use these seats . however it does have a complete drivetrain which will be pulled out, rebuilt, MHG'd and dropped in the 89.

now ill stop boring you guys with text and we'll move onto the pictures. i took all these today because of lack of memory space on my camera and me not wanting to delete my vacation pics. so anyway this is basically just what i've gotten up to @ this point in time. now remember i only paid $800 total for these 2 cars.

the 87 in all its glory....

So far i've taken out the wires, coil packs, and 3000 pipe. dont wanna take the plugs out because there about 1/2" of oil sitting in each one.
p862121_2.jpg

the god awful interior of the 87, if anyone needs anything from this lemme know and ill see if its in decen condition, it IS a targa and thats in good condition.
p862121_3.jpg

ahh the fresh bay of the 89, its gettin a repaint before the engine goes in.
p862121_4.jpg

best shot i could get of the outside shell, all mouldings are in good condition, all lights work, power antenna does not. only 2 dime sized dents in the whole body.
p862121_5.jpg

here i am in mid process of performing LASIK surgery. swapping out the stock lights for some ebay replacements (look much better i just hate the lines on the glass lights....)
p862121_6.jpg

here you can see my new wal-mart steering wheel cover
p862121_7.jpg

replaced stock door speakers with alpine 4" 2 ways
p862121_8.jpg

replaced rear speakers with 5.25" MB Quart "components" look old school but get the job done. these came out of the 87.
p862121_9.jpg

replaced the other rear speaker with the tweeter from the mb quart.
p862121_10.jpg

this is the same condition the rest of the interior is in minus the rear seat backs, driver window switch still has the lil tab thingy :).
p862121_11.jpg

cleaned up the drivers side carpet and what looks to be the stock foormats which are in suprisingly good condition for the year.
p862121_12.jpg

wipers need some rescuing
p862121_13.jpg

30 mins later
p862121_14.jpg

the car came with some aftermarket 16" wheels and BRAND NEW kuhmo tires all around, they need some cleaning up but they clean up nice
p862121_15.jpg

p862121_16.jpg

this ECU and a harness for it was in the car when i got it and i looked online to try and match the numbers but couldnt find anything. anyone know if i can use this?
p862121_17.jpg

writing on the other side, looks like its a JDM ecu for a RHD car, can i still use this with the engine from the 87?

aw i wanted those too cuz now i cant find any, wat was the condition of the grey cloths u had in there? wern't they in near mint condition? i was following your build thread and they look pretty nice, if u plan on gettin rid of em any chance you'd part out w/ just the seat cloth and plastic trim pieces?

have no idea, had what looks like junkyard markings on the timing cover, but the odo on the car said 140k and the previous owner didnt say anything about a rebuild. im just hoping i might be able to get away w/ a MHG without surfacing the block and head.

The grey cloth seats are as good as sold. Sorry.

DO NOT attempt to put a mhg on without first machining the head and block, especially if you know nothing about this engine. You are asking for heartaches down the road if you don't do that.

OH, take those knock sensors out while the engine is out of the car, otherwise they'll get broken and they are not cheap. :)

thanks for the advise on the sensors, last night we got it out and i just wanted to get the head off. ill be gone the next few days but ill take care of it when i get back.

i have about 4 years exp. machining so im gonna use a straightedge and a feeler gauge on the head and block, measure it and see if im within the tolerances. if not they get sent out to a shop (havent found one yet.)

well got the engine and tranny apart today and got the block on the engine stand. no pics today cuz my compooter is being ghey. Question, what color is the stock clutch? mine is mostly red w/ a couple lil green pieces. Why does my engine have a 6M crank, in a 7M? will this affect durability? (aiming for 400whp TOPS)

The 7ms had 6m cranks in them up until late 89. My 89 7MGTE had a 6m crank in it when we took it apart. I was like WTF? But then found out it was no biggie. Supposedly the 6M revs faster, but the 7M revs smoother. I wouldnt think that 400hp would be a problem on it. Atleast I hope not, cause Im getting close.
