okay so gas is denting my pockets. Having a supra as a DD and traveling 45-60 mins each way to school every day is killing me. So, I'm considering getting a bike. Ill save some cash on gas, and ill have a bike which i really really want. Anyway, I'm full noob when it comes to bikes. Id appreciate any advice in looking for a bike. I'm not making a ton of money so what are my best ops? buy a new bike from a dealer on dealer financing? Buy a used one and get a loan? I dont think i can save alot up right now, by the time i did summer would be ending haha.. so hit it up guys, what bikes are good, which are not, whats a good mid level noob bike id wanna keep for a couple yrs?

heheh
Don't know what to think about that.
Yeah, a few riders in this area, I would not mind seeing them get hit by a truck.
I used to be in a motorcycle community and the local crews had too many dirtbags.
Many would be banned for being crooks or idiots if they joined a forum like this and attempted to sell parts, IMO.
But then I also met lots of nice folks too over the years.
Lots of nice guys on this forum:

What is really weird is that the average age of the members there is much higher than the age of the members here. I thought bikes would attract a younger crew than gear heads (like on this site).

Ryan, get a used bike. I think it would be dumb to get a new bike if you don't even know how to ride yet. Even a 250 will do 105mph for you (like a Ninja 250).
A 600 sport bike will give you plenty of power, and you probably would not need more than that.

Bikes aren't good for transportation. I don't think they make good substitutes for cars.
Can't use it year round; can't use it in the rain; can't use it for some trips out of fear of theft.
I don't even use mine anymore. I quit racing and that was pretty much all I used it for at the end. I pretty much just keep it as a show piece now.

For some reason, I think this would be perfect for you:

Now if you were to buy one new, you may not even like riding. Why invest so much into riding when you don't even know if you like it.
For a first bike, get something used and cheap.
My first bike was a Ninja 250, and then I got my CBR 900RR.
Had the second for over ten years now, and will never sell it.

thanks for the input tony, but im looking to get a 600 most likely. I want something that looks great, performs, but is still comfortable. Im quite sure ill love riding. I know its not a good sub for a car, but for every week i ride, i can skip out on using ~2 tanks of gas in the soop. Main reason for the bike isnt for the gas mileage, its only half the reason. The other half lies on the reason that i really want a bike!! haha

I was lookin at 600s tonite... cbr and the zuki 600r look nice.. looking at 4-8 thousand i guess for something decent

Get a real bike, buy a Triumph!

I picked the one I like the best, the Thruxton, but Triumph makes a bike for every taste, sportbike, cruiser, retro cafe bike, naked streetfighter. Sorry, I am biased, I have owned three bikes, all British, all Nortons, and since they don't make Nortons anymore, well, you know the rest. I cannot find another modern bike that looks that good!
cheers, Gary

anyways, if you havent even been on a street bike before, then you need to take a motorcycle safety course first. this will help with getting your motorcycle endorsement on your license and help lower your insurance. however, depending on your age, your insurance is going to negate the upside of having transportation that gets 40-70 mpg. you are also going to have to buy a helmet, gloves and a leather jacket (at the very least), so you are spending more money there too.... whatever you decide, bikes are really fun, but like the guy who wrote the above statement, people dont like bikers. oh and cars dont see you all the time either.

The first bike I rode was a 73(?)Honda 350. then a 95 Suzuki GSX750R.
shortly after that I bought a '04 Kawi 636.
I loved the bike, but I spent too much money on it.
If I were to get another bike I would probably get an 01-02 Honda F4i, They're nice bikes, nothing crazy, but will surpass all my needs as I do not plan on racing/being a jackass on the road. And It won't kill my wallet again.

Good luck on the search, I definetly suggest learning on a smaller bike and not jumping on a very expensive bike with as much power as a civic. It definetly helps to gain confidence and control on something you dont have to worry about.

heh some people think of it that way.
But to some, racing is the most exciting and adrenaline producing thing you can do.
I look back and say, what was on my mind?!@
But then I think, when I rode like that, I though that was the most fun thing on earth.
Racing can provide the same amount of excitement as winning a $10,000,000 lottery ticket.

I do NOT wish other people to do it, nor am I advocating it, but just stating my point of veiw.
Also, even when I rode like that, I was always considerate to other motorist IF they were around.
You can be fast and be considerate, just like you can drive slow and be very inconsiderate to others on the road.
Mostly when I did that stuff, drivers weren't around to see it...it was on mountain roads with no driveways or people.

I totally agree Tony, I was into the spirited riding and it was always a huge rush. But if getting another bike, at least right now I would not have the time to make it to a track or organized thing. And I would never need to go as fast as a 900cc,1000cc, or bigger can bring me, The most fun I had was the corners, like you said mountain roads with no-one else around to harm. And a 600 seems to be the best for that.
The "being a jackass" was more aimed towards those whom I used to ride with. They would wheelie down local streets, do highway pulls of 120+ in and out of traffic, and cut between cars in traffic, just being totally unsafe. I'm glad I have the Supra now as I have met so many great people, and very few a-holes, where as with the bike I met few great people, and the rest were a-holes.

I used to think that buying a bike to save gas was a good idea.. then I thought about it. :)

You're going to drop $4k+ on a used 600. Then you're going to insure that thing for $100+ a month, and you're going to need to repalce the tires every spring on that sport bike. Tires are say $250 for a set. Gear will be extra as well.

If you want a bike.. get a bike. But don't get it in hopes of saving money.

I know its not going to be the answer to rising fuel costs bla bla bla. I just really want a bike, and gas mileage definately pushes it over the edge in the want factor. Ive wanted one for a long time and what better reason to take the final step towards getting one than it saving me some cash on gas! haha. I know its not going to be cheap, but whats worth having thats cheap? a supra? i think not haha
