I like the Sager because it has a larger screen and a better video card, but it doesn't have the option of a second hard drive like the Thinkpad does and 200GB just inst enough. I'd like to have at least 300GB.

Any other laptops I should look into?

I come from a land down under
Just bought 2 x Nec Versa 530's 1 for the CNC 1 for the Supra, got them through a bud in the trade and for budget Laptops I'm impressed.

Been using an old old Thinkpad for many years now and it's been 100% reliable.

You need to ask yourself exactly what are you uisng it for then choose one that fits you.

I'm on a T60 right now and I love it. It works badass and is tough as nails. It never gives me problems, always plays games well and can run Solidworks decently.

EDIT: I should also add that I use mine constantly. Due to school and boredom I spend countless hours a day on my laptop. I can't remember the last time I shut it off. University is a good test for technology.:)

XPS M1530 ;)

Dell's XPS series is pretty good (typing this on an M1210 now, and bought the wife an M1330) but STAY AWAY from their inspiron line.

Vostro isn't bad, but Thinkpad is better.

17" isn't a laptop - it's a damn portable desktop.

nice, but do you need all that power in a laptop?

imo get a cheap one and save the rest for a powerful desktop

I'm in the Navy and will have a sea going rate so I want it all in one package so I can bring it on the ships with me.

Doward: 17" is tiny to me, my desktop is on a 26".

Also...

Well we have 12 Lenovo Z61 which we bought at work 8 months ago and lets just say we have had to replace 4 system boards already (not to mention recently we have had to wait 4-5 days each because they do not stock the part in the US.. and we have next day business service contracts :3d_frown:)

I don't know if the T61 are any better, but I have a bad taste for the current ThinkPads... IBM used to rock it, but I sort of hate Lenovo now.

I was never a Dell fan until I got this M1210. I used to get new machines every 5-6 months and hand down the old models, but this laptop has been absolutely flawless - bar none, the best laptop I have ever used.

I have heard good things about other XPS models, but have no personal experience. I get laptops for portability, so I probably will never own one that is > a 14" model.

That being said, the video memory and better processor would sway me to the Sager (though I don't know what sort of reputation the brand has).

I love my IBM T61. Runs xp and vista quite well (drivers are more suited for vista however). 60FPS in WoW, maxed out in CS1.6 and ~40 in CS:S. I work on these laptops all the time (school provides IBM laptops to students + faculty) and there are hardly any errors that are not caused by users. Only thing I can say is that the fan needs to be blown out with compressed air every week or 2, if it gets clogged it dies.

Yeah, the m1210 is what turned me on to the XPS series. I've had it for about 1.5 years now, with *zero* problems. Completely flawless, and I am HARSH on my portable electronics.

That said, I'm looking to sell it now, and get an Asus eeePc - the 12.1" is too big for the portability I require ;)

Well the Sager 9262 is out of the runnings. Did some more research and it only has around a 1 hour battery life under working conditions. I'm leaning a little more towards the 5792 now.

What sort of working conditions are you looking at?

I have a Thinkpad T43... It's been in the rain, dropped into a utility vault, left on top of the furnace one time by accident, and much more.

However, I'm on my 2nd mainboard, 3rd screen, and it's starting to get a little wonky again.

If your working conditions are anything like my working conditions I might direct you over to a Panasonic toughbook, otherwise I highly recommend the thinkpads.
