Wheel well = rust

Looky what surprised me when I looked under the carpet in the hatch. :1zhelp:

Questions:
1. Whats the best way to remove the rust? Does that rust dissolver/converter stuff work?
2. How do I repair the damage and make it rust proof?
3. Whats the best way to avoid the rust next time?
4. Is this the worst you've seen?

Oh and I have found where it was leaking I think. One of the screws for the bottom window moulding was missing and the bolt was rusted quite bad. So I think it was coming from there, its all taped up now, I'm just waiting for a rainy day for it to proved. (We are on water restrictions where I live otherwise I could just use a hose.)

That really doesnt look too bad. Try to clean the rust away, first. Hopefully it is just on the surface. If that is the case, after you remove it all lay down some nice rust inhibiting primer, paint , etc. Whatever you prefer. If its not just on the surface you are going to have to cut and reweld in new sheet metal. Also check your tailight seals and hatch seal. That water had to get in there some how.

My wheel well has some slight rust as well, not nearly that bad, but similar. I just got a roll of shop towels and started to get all the loose oxidization off and it looked much better. I need to try to sand that like crazy sometime...

that's not bad at all.

now that I've tried them, I'm a fan of POR-15 products. grab yourself a starter kit from here. you may need to buy yourself some more paint as they can they give you is tiny.

their kit comes with degreaser, and rust neutralizer that eats away some rust and puts a zinc phosphate coating on it. It converts the rust to iron phosphate so it won't keep busting off new oxygen atoms and continue to rust. the zinc helps the paint stick. The kit also comes with their world famous very strong paint. the stuff goes on smooth, it's gas/chemical and water proof and if it gets scratched (hard to do) rust won't bleed past the scratch. It's so strong and flexible it can even be put on a piece of metal and not be cracked or split. well worth the money. I just fixed my leaky hatch with this stuff in conjunction with their epoxy putty.

of course, wire brush it as best you can before you put it on. the less rust the better IMO. However, the reps tell me it actually adheres better to rust as there is more of a "tooth" for it to hold onto. don't get the stuff on your hands! the only way it will come off is with the natural oils or your skin...which takes a couple weeks. also, scoop the stuff out of the can into another container when using it. If you get any in the lip of the can, you won't be able to open it. Put some plastic wrap between the lid and the can to help aswell.

I noticed when I was doing this yesterday that I do have some holes. :naughty:

I replaced my tail lights seals a few years back, they should still be good though.

Your friend is a pro, that looks like a nice job to me.

Question: What is under the circlular panel to the right of the wheel well? I took it off and saw some wires to a cylinder shaped thing... is it that fuel level sender? mines broke, if its that easy to get at, I might try fix it.

It looks like that's the passenger rear, ya?
I think I saw the cover for where you fondle the fuel pump.
If that's what you meant.

+1 to the POR15 stuff. I had a hole in the EXACT same place. I used phosphoric acid and POR15 with the black rubber paint on top.

stock our cars have/had motorized antennas and thats the motorized antenna unit thing.

if your car doesnt have a stock antenna then you prolly dont have anything in that cubby hole.

only thing thats in that hole is some wiring and the antenna unit.......and the tail light failure box i think.

im speaking on US cars also im not completely sure what all is in there on RHD mk3's or if its the same or what.

I keep an extra qt. of earl in my antenna cubby.

Also I used an aerosol rubber coating from permatex in the inside of my wheel well when I
sanded it out. Bought it at O'rielly's. This stuff sucked. I keft it sit for a week. Untouched.

Wen I went in and touched it to test for solidity. I lifted off of the car and stuck to my finger tip. It's supposed to be a spray can dura liner.

Although when I cleaned it up. It covered my troubled areas and left a decent temp fix.
Stops the rust anyways. Looks like ass. But it's the spare tire well sp wtf.

Edit: Tho one on the floor of the car under the false floor. Has 3 screws.

por15 is awesome...what is the black rubber paint?? does it adhere well enough to the gloss black? i have had problems with other paint sticking to the por15
