Here's a question. I have an 86.5 with mild mods. Intake and exhaust mostly. Lately, I've been getting this strange clicking sound right around the ECU (under the glove compartment) when I decellerate. Also, when it DOES make that sound, the car will stall if I depress the clutch. Also, it seems to REALLY detonate (ping, or knock) if I catch it before it dies out.

I'm really scratching my head on this one. Has anyone run into this before? :1zhelp:

it doesnt make the sound during idle and when u rev it do u hear it??
sounds like a rod knock to me

Let's leave rodknock out of this, it IS detonation. I'm looking for something like fuel, or AFM, or TPS out of adjustment. It's NOT a rodknock because it is INTERMITTANT!

im not sure valve ticking would have the same symptoms. if so, noise would be higher up and most prominent at cold starts.

hmm.. interesting.. clicking under the dash.. maybe for some reason the fuel pump relay is kicking on and off, and that is the sound you are hearing 'from behind the glove box'. sometimes i hear my fuel pump relay click a bit when my supra occasionally almost dies and i can hear it from what sounds like behind the glove box. maybe its the relay going bad. it is locate above the air box on the strut tower. its a goldish colored box about 2 inches high, 2 inches wide, and 2 inches thick. it says fuel pump relay on it and has a 10 digit toyota part number. see if thats whats clicking and let us know.

Have you ever done a tune up?

Plugs, wires, caps, and button? maybe o2 sensor?

WTF is a button!?!?

Yeah, I did a full tune-up about 6 or 7 months ago when I fixed the BHG. Used OEM cap & rotor, and NGK plugs & wires. O2 was replaced about a year ago.

Josh, that does sound interesting. Has this happened to you before?

well, the fuel pump relay 'clicks' when it turns on or off.. when mine tried to die yesterday as a matter of fact, i heard the fuel pump go click.. click.. real fast as it died. nothing to worry about on my end, happens once every 3 days or so.. its just a Supra..lol.. but im thinking maybe...MAYBE there might be something causing your fuel pump relay to kick on and off.. get under your hood, find the fuel pump relay and have a friend put his/her hand on it then you go in the car and make it do whatever it is that its doing.. and see if tehy feel that thing clicking.. let me know

Okay, I got it to happen again today. My fiance was sitting in the passenger seat, and I ran around front and played with the throttle while feeling the fuel pump relay. She kept nodding her head when she heard "that clickin' noise."

She also nodded every time that relay clicked in my hand...

So, it's replace and retest! Thanks for the help!

Yeah, the relay was clicking away. But now I'm wondering why... It clicked when I blipped the throttle. I've done some thinking, and I also remember that the relay clicked when the car wasn't running (key on/engine off) when I was playing with the AFM a few months back. Maybe the AFM is bad, and the ECU thinks the engine isn't running because the AFM door is reading closed?

This is what happens when you get used parts. Time to get out the DMM and check out the meter... again.
