actually havent heard this question in a while oddly enough.

FIRST. burp your coolant system, its air trapped in your system and the area behind the dash is the highest point. jack front of car up in the air and let it run for a while w/ the radiator cap off for like 15 min until all the air bubbles are gone.

if it happens again. well you just may have the main symptom of a blown head gasket. check your exhaust for white smoke on startup and for water residue on your oil cap/milkshake. if your coolant turns brown that may be a sign as well. I suggest you go buy a block tester from napa and check to see if its Co2 in your coolant system.

if it is, then your head gasket is blown.

Don't get scared into thinking it's a bhg yet, first burp it a few times. I've had this 4, 5 times usually I get it when temperatures change drastically or after fooling with cooling system (changing hose, flushing, etc). Americanjebus hit it on the head just burp it. I also recommend to turn the heater on high when your burping it after it warms up a little to make sure you get more air out.

It's caused by air in coolant system.

Make sure your coolant is full and that you have some in your overflow.

Check for coolant leaks.

Personally I think blurping is crap. If you have a heathly coolant system it should purge its self. If its not something else is wrong.

I had this problem when I had BHG.

Check for the easy things I listed above first.

Mine started the same thing again, but this time instead of being a bhg I fixed it with a new radiator cap from AZ. $8 and problem fixed. ;)

Edit: Rumptis is right. I didn't burp it and the air evacuated itself once the system was sealed.

ok well heres another thing i KNOW air is in my system.. has been for a while i burped it some and couldnt get it all out.. my temp gauge will go to normal then just drop to cold and it bounces inbetween so there is air in the system... HG isn't blown im sure.. car still has full power...anything other than burping to get it out?

I used to have the same problem as yours for almost a year . But i solve that problem 3 months ago , all i did was jack front engine up as high as i can then remove radiator cap , start the car and turn the heat all the way . watch for coolant , it keep getting lower and i keep fill it up untill coolant start going back out then i put the radiator back on and done. For the temp gauge bounces up and down i think either water temperature sender getting bad or some thing wrong with the gauge , you can test water temperature sender by dip in hot water . or replace it ( my water temperture gauge act like that ) , i replaced it and it when back to normal .

ok thanks man.... i need a better jack then to get the car higher.. i'v done it a few times guess the air is still in there. i sure hope it isnt the HG.. shouldnt be, its a fairly new Felpro metal/paper gasket tourqed to 70+Ft. lbs. so should still be good.

Don't just jack the car up though . You also need to remove radiator cap , start the car up turn the heater all the way , let the car run , watch for coolant and fill it up untill it start going back out then put radiator cap back on . I think your water temperature sender sensor is getting bad it's about $25. at toyota dealer.
