Atfer of year and half of runnig 14psi and 6puck/heavy duty PP. The tranny is area is making some noise in 5nd and 3nd. I have been reading about some these different fluids and i am wondering what should i do to pro-long the w58 life until i can get a r154.

One of the threads really caught my eye and it sounds like a good idea .... lift the rear, drain the fluids, fill her with ATF, put her in 5th and let roll for a few mins, drain and then add one "special" of the fluids ..... cant really remember but is this a good idea?

I took my dad for a ride to see what he thought and he said everything sounds ok to him. But he did notice that 4th was really quiet compared to 3rd. I would call the sound more of a vibrating noise than a grinding noise. Also i never installed the bushing that goes on the end of the shifter:nono: ...... I am going replace it.

4th is quiet because there is no 4th gear. 4th speed is direct drive where the input and output shaft are locked together.

If you are sure that the noise does not start in 1st, and gradually get quieter, and not just 5th and 3rd, then 5th and 3rd are likely the problem.

With out the shifters bottom bushing, you cannot have a direct connection with the syncros, there will be play in the shifter linkage. At that level of power that your pushing. I'm suprised it is still working properly. Get the toyota truck shifter, its one of the simplest and cheapest mods you can do to the supra. I loved the direct feel of mine, when I replaced the bushing and the cup on the shifter. As far as the tranny goes. A r-154 would be the best replacement. You can take a gamble and still run the w58.
