Ok so my tranny makes a crunching noise when shifting into 2nd @ 3K+ and at times I have to physically punch the shifter into 3rd. This is my first manual, but my guess would be the sychro rings are going out. Also, tThe clutch line is fully bled and the clutch fully disengages (as far as I can tell, anyway).

So I have two questions for everyone:

1. Are there any other possible causes for the noise shifting difficulty?

2. After a bit of a search, I found this ebay kit...

Has anyone on the forum tried it out (If not, I guess I'll play guinea pig)?

Don't punch it in gear, you risk breaking a shift fork (then you're really screwed).

When in gear, does your shift lever have a lot of play?
What fluid are you running?

We use Transtar parts all the time at the shop. However, it doesn't say if its for the n/a or turbo. They're two entirely different transmissions. I'd be sure you're getting the correct parts. Also, find a competent trans. shop to do this. You need a press to remove certain parts, and a few different special tools. Look it up in the tsrm.

Yeah, that's a lot of play :D

You need a shifter seat and bushing. I recommend the Marlin Crawler set (driftmotion carries them and will get it to you faster). Also, as it's a W58, the insert where the lower shifter ball goes into the tranny can wear, BillyM makes a bronze replacement if needed.

See if that helps. You can also try Red Line MT-90... it's cheaper than a tranny rebuild.

Hmm, then maybe it's the shift lever, because I have BillyM's kit installed and he has the Marlin Crawler parts included. That kit did decrease the old amount of play, so according to what you're saying, there's a lot more left to be reduced :(

Weird... I know on the old toyota trannies that worn shift forks would do the same thing, can't speak for the W58 though.

It could be I guess I'll have to pull the tranny and find out for sure

Is the little white(?) cup still on the ball on the end of the shifter?
Unless the new one just dropped of it, should still be

The original shifter on mine was used with worn bushings for so long it actually deformed that ball. When I got in there and installed all new parts, the cup seemed to fit good, but would come off when shifting. It would catch in there as well, and make it hard to shift. I used the shifter out of my parts car, and fixed the problem.

Since you're thinking of pulling the trans, you have to pull the shifter first anyway. Might check to be sure. Make sure the bushing on the lower shifter arm is still in place as well.
