Valve adjustment issue

I am finally getting around to putting my engine back together and I ran into a snag here.


I just got the head back from the machine shop where they resurfaced it and did a valve re-grind.

I clamped it down to the block and installed the cams to measure my clearances. I found that several of the valves have no clearance, and most others are too tight, which I imagine is normal after having the valves re ground.

The problem is that A couple of my clearances are at zero (or possibly slightly holding the valve open) and those shims are already the smallest offered replacement shim.
My exhaust 1 and 4 valves are all this way, and my intake number one has this problem.

Has anyone else run into this?

The machine shop screwed up - that is not normal. Take the head back and have them adjust the valve stem length.

Thats what I figured. It was a brand new HKS gasket too.

As long as you have not run it, the MHG is fine. You do not want to run it either, burn a valve, backfire into the intake manifold, etc...all bad.

nope, the engine is still on the stand. I just meant, now I have to clean off all the viton or whatever is on there and run without it.

No, you don't. The viton is intact until it's heated. Take it off and inspect...if it looks good, use it as is.

Really, I figured it would be completely stuck to the head and block surfaces after torqueing. Ill take it off and see.

Yep...viton shouldn't stick, especially to a low RA surface.

Don't forget to re-do the RTV on the front timing plate when you reinstall. Check the valve lash again before you put the head on. I'm starting to think you might not want to trust this shop's work

yea I will do a baseline check on all my valves before I put the head on this time, should have done that before.

Whats amazing to me is that all my valve lash measurements were out of spec loose before I had it done, and he took off so much that some are now unable to be adjusted out... I checked the valves per the TSRM to see if they had too much cut from them and they check out ok, so he just must have taken a lot of meat out of the seats.

when i had my head done i use the second smallest lash caps all around and had the guy grind the tips. its so much easier to get them even this way . because they ony have so many size lash caps. i found the other way you kind of have to settle and cant get them all dead nutz perfect
