Upgraded Ignition System?

Hello everyone, I have an 87 supra turbo and im looking at upgrading my ignition system. I want a more reliable ignition than the stock system. I was wondering what are some good ignition systems that are out there. I was looking at some earlier and im not too sure if some of them upgrade the whole system such as the ignitor, coils. i want to switch out the ignitor and the coils with new ones but it costs roughly $1K from the dealership. Before i sink money into getting all new coils and ignitor i was wondering if there is something out there to replace both of them and upgrade them also.

I would like to upgrade it because better faster spark means more power. And ever since i have owned my supra i have been trying to fix all of the previous owners mess ups. The engine wiring harness was replaced because the previous owner(s) did a shitty splice job about 50 times in 50 different places and half the crap they spliced didnt work anyways. Such as the air/ fuel controller was never hooked up to the throttle positioning sensor. and the safc would turn on and turn off whenever it felt like it. So i have basically started from scratch with my car and trying to bring it back to stock unless there are good upgrades i can do to it. Anyways, after i took all that stuff out i have been wanting to either upgrade what i am replacing or returning it to brand new stock parts due to it being 21 years old. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Well, no it doesn't. You only benifit from an ignition upgrade if yours is deficient. The stock system has held some awfully high numbers without break up.

That is probably it. I feel for you, I really do. There are a bunch of hacks out here who own these cars. Getting it in correct working order is the first priority. You need one of these. It shows correct routing and wiring. A needed tool if you plan on having wiring correct in the car.

Yes, the stock system is VERY durable compared to most systems. No points, no distributor caps to replace, nothing. The coils do crack with age (but come on, most cars have the ORIGINAL coils, not many cars can attest to that), and the wiring can go bad for the CPS, coils, and plugs...

Very rarely have I seen an ignitor fail either.

These cars ARE very sensative to plug gap though, if you just pop plugs in right out of the package, the car will not run right, I promise that...

Tooqwik has done an ignition upgrade, but you'd have to search to find it. Try looking at all threads started by him. That would be fun just to look at the pictures you could find in that search.

I like his upgrade. It is purely asthetic, something I don't normally go for. But a clean engine bay is important. But not at the expense of function. His is really good.

As stated the stock system is very reliable and 5 minutes with an ignition scope would show you how capable it is. Mine has performed flawlessly with original components for over 21 years. Then again I maintain it and don't do stupid stuff like open circuit secondary firings.
