Just purchased this used turbo from fs thread and it does not look to be in any usable condition. upon inspection, right off the bat i found the wastegate area is cracked to hell, along with a long slit that follows the exhaust runner leading into turbo. the compressor side looks to be in fair condition though. some movement in shaft hope it is still within spec.

What are my options? try it see if it works? Cannot afford to rebuild it at this time but also cannot afford not to have the car running at the moment.

i have heard of people "closing" the wastegate port so that it dont open, not to sure i want to do that. How would you keep from over boosting?

let me know what you think

Closing the wastegate and not having a functional wastegate would cause infinite boost ( or boost til the turbo gives). The housing might not be reusable, but I haven't heard anyone have running issues with a internally crack housing.

Someone else can also chime in on this... but welding the flapper door shut is a no no if you don't have any alternative wastegate source.

i was thinking that the internal crack wouldnt cause much issue but around the wastegate seems it would be a leak right? turbo wouldnt spool correctly with exhaust bypassing the turbine?

as far as blocking the wastegate, i would boost to the max turbo psi. i do have an aftermarket bov that maybe i can adjust to open at a certain psi? it did have a boost leak until i turned the screw in. i think i may have been had on this turbo but before i go and do anythin to it i am gonna talk to a few people i know that do turbo work and see what they say. If they say the exhaust housing is junk then ill experiment, safely that is so i dont blow shit up.

If they are premature cracks I see no problem running it. I've had chunks off a wastgate opening missing before ( on a different vehicle) and only small little side effects. it does not effect how the car runs on the street.. only while in boost.

You can't adjust boost of a BOV. The wastegate regulates boost and opens accordingly. By all means... don't weld the flapper door. There was a video on youtube sometime back, a group of DSM owners did this on a 14b turbo.. and boosted 30 psi (no power after 15psi)... until it literally ripped itself inside out.

yea if you find a way to use a bov as a wastegate, the pressure will go down on the intake side, meanwhile the exhaust side is still building up turning the turbine faster (since it can't go anywhere else due to no route to bypass the turbine), trying to keep the intake side pressured. then poof.

Its all good, i am still using my stocker for now, the guy was awesome refunded my money and didnt ask for the turbo back. I mean one could rebuild it )replace the exhaust housing, and both wheels) but for the price of that you might as well upgrade.
