throttle position sensor

The other day i was trying to put in another throttle position sensor but i'm having problems with the position that it goes.For some reason i line everything up,except for that it pull back the opening so when i turn the engine on it races then idles at 1 grand,then races again.I don't know what i did.could anybody help me.I was going to take the throttle body off and try to maybe somehow dismantle it to where i could have it to where the throttle is totally closed in side to prevent the racing.Thanks

huh? Should mount right on. It's a little hard to not mount right... You sure you've got the right one? The GE and GTE use different TPS.

Sounds like you didnt align the the tab into the notch properly.

I don't know what you mean by "notch". Nothing I can think of that fits that description other then the reinforcement ribs on the side opposite of where the throttle plate's tabs sit.


Gimme a few minutes and I'll post some pics.

EDIT:

7M-GE TPS, the tabs sit horizontally. If you've got a 7M-GTE TPS you'll see the difference.

Here's where it mount on the throttle body:

To mount the TPS without issue place the TPS on the TB at a 90º angle as shown below:

Then rotate CLOCKWISE:

Now insert the screws and align the TPS as covered in the TSRM:

No problem... I figured that the whole alignment issue gets posted often enough that it needed to be addressed in an easy to understand manner.

I think i used the wrong sensor.The one i used was for a gte do to i did what your examples showed and for some reason the idle was worse.What i'll do is use the one i originally used and see what happens.I will let you know what the outcome is.

Did you compare your TPS to the one in the picture by looking at the bottom? If the tabs which are moves by the plate on the TB are rotated 90º from that pictured it may be a GTE TPS... regardless, it's not a GE TPS.

Did you make sure the TPS is properly calibrated and that the IDL switch is closing?

Ahh, sorry, I missed that remark. A GTE TPS will not work in a N/A. Period. (Of course, I did cover that they were different all the way back at the beginning of this.)

I feel like this whole thread has been constant mis-communication.

OP, get the PART NUMBER from the piece you are attempting to use. In my experience all the turbo TPS's have a blue sticker and GE ones dont. (I think GE are generally black stickered)

If the old TPS and new TPS dont look exactly the same, they are in fact different. Durr...

Nothing but a GE TPS will work... once again, durr...

I been reading the t.s.r.m.Sorry to inconvenience you it's just that i only had my ge for a year and had to do two head gasket jobs on her since then and wanted one since they came out in 1988.I been hooked ever since.

This sensor number is 89452-14050 which are the top numbers and the bottom numbers are 198500-0241.This is the sensor that did'nt work.the other sensor number is 89452-14050 and the bottom number is 0240.

*edit, did you notice you posted the EXACT same part numbers for both? The second number I imagine has something to do with when/where they were manufactured.

If both are in fact the same part number (89452-14050) then both *should* work, but you should really use a voltmeter to test them. Might be time to buy a brand new one.

also pre 89 TPS, are differnt then 89+. Wiring plug is the same, just one is 90 degrees off then the other. If needed I can post a pic after work. I know because when I bought my FFIM from tubbie, his throttle body (TPS) was made for his 87 and my 89 TPS would not work. Never the less he sold me his for $10
