Temperature Spike, NOT BHG, also Code 24 & 31

Some of you may already know all the crap I've been though with this JDM swap, well God has sent me another swift kick in the behind. I was driving on the Freeway for the first time, and I was cruising at 3K RPM (JDM 7MGTE/R154/4.3 LSD) I went to turn around satisfied that my swap could handle it, as soon as I got off of the freeway the temperature began to spike. I pulled over into a parking lot and rushed outside to see what had happened. Coolant all over my hood, but everything around the enigne was dry. I looked in the overflow and it wasn't boiling over, I had just topped it off yesterday after adjusting some coolant lines. It had dropped a bit. Nothing to worry about right? So I turn the car off and low and behold, lots of white smoke coming from the Radiator. I squeeze the radiatior hoses, and they are still pressurized, so I'm standing there scratching my head and praying that it's not a BHG. So I let it cool off and decide to leapfrog it home. I start driving it and it spikes after about two minutes coming up from about normal operating temp. So I let it cool off again and decide to try something risky and leave the hood popped and blast the heater. On the freeway ride home it stayed at nomral operating temperature, but the second I stopped and closed the hood when I got home, it started spiking again. I drained the oil, it smelled normal and looked like I was expecting it to; black due to the diagnosis process of getting the damn thing running right. So that leads me to believe that it's not a BHG, but I could still be wrong. When I would try to start the car the check engine light would come on in the first three seconds of idle, and once I gave it gas and let it idle again it went away. Checked the codes, 24 & 31 which are the Air Temp Sensor and the AFM. I'm pretty sure these problems are unrelated, and I have a spare AFM, but it's not like I can drive it with my new AFM to see if it still throws codes with this Cooling problem going on. When I started it this morning before driving it, I got the lovely waterfall noise in the dash from the heater core, which was clogged yesterday, but seemed to magically heal itself :)dunno:) Originally when the car was NA it was running green, but when I converted to turbo, I stared running the red, and yesterday was the first time I ran the heater since the conversion.

Sorry, I know the post is long, but I wanted to make sure that I didn't leave anything out. I hope someone can give me a little insight here.

Shawn

Sounds like your fan clutch is toast...is it a turbo or NA fan and clutch?
As soon as you got off the freeway, no more airflow across the radiator ;)

The waterfall sound is from having air in the system...after what happened, that would be expected. I would have the cooling system pressure tested.

Turbo Clutch/Fan, both as new as the engine.. And I never actually saw the coolant shooting out, but I think it COULD HAVE come from the overflow, but I donno. I'll look into the fan though.

Edit: I wasnt planning on pressure testing it till next week, but I guess It'll have to be sooner :) And Also I forgot to mention there was a lot of hissing when the white smoke came out, like there was a leak.. somewhere.

That hissing was likely from the rad cap to the overflow.

So this is a 10 blade fan and the JDM clutch...bet the clutch has no (or little) oil left in it. Did you change the thermostat or is it the same one that came on the JDM?

I would change the thermostat and gasket too...I like the Stant Superstat vs the Toyota OEM. You want the 190 deg one.

NP ;)

One more thing on the clutch...when you start the car cold, you should be able to hear the fan roaring away for about 15-30 sec at idle. Then the noise will die out. If it's not doing this, it's the clutch.

You're welcome. :icon_bigg

Once you fix it, fill with no more than 50/50 mix coolant (since you live in the Bay area). It will take several heat up/cool down cycles to get all the air out of the system, so check the coolant daily and take it easy for a few days.

I would still replace the thermostat since it's a JDM with unknown history. A pressure test is also a very good idea...the hoses might be dry rotted and you not know it. The Mk III cooling system is a finicky beast ;)
