Dunno bout your gauge problem.

But to do the tune-up, you have to take off the TB. Undo the support attached to the head, and take out the 4 12mm bolts, and pull it up word. You shouldnt have to disconnect any hoses but I'm not sure. I did when I did mine.

Hello NooB,

Here's some reading material for you:
http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/TechTips/engine_error_codes.aspx
http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Library/TSRM/MK3/
http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Library/TEWD/MK3/

So your temp gauge acts up when you're in 5th? Very odd. I'd start with checking for engine error codes and then start checking the harness and connections. It doesn't do this at all in any other gear?

In order to change the plugs and wires you need to disconnect the black accordian hose that's attached to the throttle body, disconnect the throttle linkage from the throttle body, disconnect the pipe that comes up from the valve covers and connects in one spot to the throttle body. Now just unbolt the 4 bolts that hold the throttle body to the "Y" shaped pipe and you should be able to flip the throttle body up out of the way enough to pull the wires and plugs.

the tune-up? a ratchet, a 12 mm deep socket, and.. a screwdriver for teh intake clamps? lol. Maybe needle nose pliers if you wanna take the hoses off.

Cap and rotor are cheap. You can check to see if the cap and rotor are clean and in spec though (I'm pretty sure the TSRM covers it).

Some advice, if you don't cheap out on the plugs and wires they'll last you a long time.

EDIT: If you haven't already, check the air filter and oil.

It's not the worst job you'll have to do. Just relax and be patient.

Cost is going to depend on what brand of parts you get and where you get them from. If you make your own ignition wires you can have an excellent set of wires for under $80, if you buy them locally they may be over $150, if you buy the cheapest things you can find they'll probably be $25.98 and will last you a good solid month or two. ;) Brands that I've tried and like are Toyota (the OEM wires aren't half bad, MSRP is $90.63), NGK, MSD and Taylor.

For spark plugs, I haven't run anything other than NGK Iridiums and NGK Copper plugs, there are some other that people on here really like though so you might want to do a search. Prices range from as little as $2ea to $15ea.

Distributor and rotor can be had inexpensively from any auto parts store (I'd guess under $20 for both). The cap from Toyota is around $14, the rotor is around $7.

The air filter should only be a few bucks if you get a drop in replacement.

The prices on all of this will vary from one shop to the next and if you order online you can save a lot more... just be sure of what you're ordering.

Poke a hole in the rad with an icepick? Blow the head gasket? I'm not sure if you're joking here or just not describing an actual problem well. Are you referring to the overflow tank or the radiator? Generally not loosing coolant is a good thing.

You may need to replace the thermostat or the radiator car if your temps are fluctuating... it could be something worse but start with those two thing as they're the cheapest. Also make sure the harness connection to the temp sender is clean and secure, the increased vibration at higher speeds with a poor connection could be a contributing factor.

did you say radiator cap???

The radiator cap is an integral part of the cooling system that is all too often taken for granted. It's a pressure release, release too much pressure and the boiling point of the coolant lowers. However, I don't think it's the cause of your problem or you'd see fluctuations and loss of coolant more often.

What would cause my 5th gear really weak?

Perhaps the fact that it's the highest gear? 4th gear is roughly 1:1 on our tranny. That means one rotation of the crankshaft equals one rotation of the driveshaft. 5th is around .73:1 (if I remember correctly), this means that for every one rotation of the crankshaft the driveshaft turns ~1.5 times.

Very odd, so you can't go past what, 65MPH? So I take it the engine revs past 3500RPM in every other gear? Do the RPMs keep climbing? Any aftermarket electronics installed that you know of?
