Refreshing Interior

Step 1. Instrument cluster
Since I'm jobless and can't afford to do everything I want at once :3d_frown:

Anyway, time to bring the car into the 21st century. Out with the old ugly green lights and yellow needles
p1387143_1.jpg

Also time to get rid of the stock automatic instrument cluster (notice the normal & power mode) in favor of the manual transmission cluster.

I took it all apart to see how everything was put together

Was tempted to roll back the miles, but I got lazy
p1387143_6.jpg

Painted the needles white
p1387143_7.jpg

Then waited 2 weeks for my blue Hong Kong special LEDs to arrive :sarcasm:

p1387143_9.jpg

Took a drive up to Ft Myers, after struggling with rusty screws, only to find the needles are REALLY sensitive to the extra weight the paint added.

My tachometer is about 200rpms off, at least at idle, and at first my speedo needle was bouncing all over the place, but seems to have corrected itself on the drive back to Naples. All the other gauges work fine.

Picture shows the needles to be yellowish here, but they really match the numbers in real life
p1387143_10.jpg

Being the impatient person I am, I couldn't wait until nightfall so I went to the mall's parking garage to take pics of the cluster illuminated

p1387143_11.jpg

p1387143_12.jpg

I'm not done yet, but this is all there is for now. The needles are illuminated from below, unlike newer cars, so this is where it gets complicated. I want my needles to be white at night as well. So I will need to drill into the clear plastic that disperses the light from below, and block off the area where the blue LED lights it, and install small white LEDs.

Wat?

Oh yeah the car's "name" is Amy Li. And I am completely, and enthusiastically against everything CUTE.

1. Instrument cluster makeover pt. 2

Not being satisfied with the monotone blue, I ordered white LED strips in 2.4" length
p1398069_1.jpg

Removed the clear plastic in the bottom of cluster
p1398069_2.jpg

Replaced with strip...
p1398069_3.jpg

I used black tape on top to block out the blue light from behind
p1398069_4.jpg

p1398069_5.jpg

Now, I like this TONS better than before, but I have to move the strip forward a little bit as there's too much glare on the plastic right now.... plus it looks awful bc the glare shows how nasty the plastic cluster lens is, LOL

More pics to come when I reposition the LEDs to not glare so much...
