Didn't they have a bit of overlap though, when it came to the ECU, crank, and cross-members/mounts?

Your telling me. I have a 89+ front bumper, and tails. But a motor with a 6M crank. Then 89+ motor mounts and sub-frame. But the manufacturer's date is 2/89. My car is a little confused.

Running changes don't make a model year.

Was just pointing out that the manufacture date isn't going to guarantee that your car is set up a certain way...

Christ, if my old man didn't have an '89 twenty years ago I think it would be my least favorite year then. Was it really nessecary to have changes made in the middle of the year?

it was for the 1J crossover, since Japan classifies their cars by the build year, not the model year. So for Japan, the changes were all made for 88, not 89 like us..

Late 89's started 01/89

Everything after had late k member and late 90 style harness. Cars built around the change probably had whatever was left over.
