I always have doubts about stories like this. How do I know that those were from street racing? Further, how many people does street racing really kill? How does it stack up against the other killers - smoking, military service, drug abuse, drunk driving? Just to name a few.
Does racing on a track make it any safer? Everyone always says so, but where's the actual proof? What percentage of street races end in death vs the percentage of track races that end in death?
I'm not saying that street racing isn't dangerous, or that it doesn't endanger innocent lives. What I am saying is that I'd rather concentrate my life saving efforts where I'm going to get the most bang for my buck.
I'm starting to get a little old now - nearly 40 - and I've had quite a few friends shuffle off this mortal coil. I've lost people to suicide, heart defects, drug overdose, drunk driving, car accidents (that did *NOT* involve speeding), one guy lost control of his motorbike pulling a wheelie in front of our high school, I'm going to mark that one up to stupidity. Lost a couple friends in a plane crash. Boating... problem with carbon monoxide poisoning. Childbirth. One brain tumor.
I know the media likes to make a big deal about it, but my honest opinion about the media is that they are usually full of shit. They'll make a big deal out of anything that will convince Joe Public to watch their advertisements.
Has anyone here actually lost a friend due to street racing? I know we've all heard about it, but we've all heard about people getting shot by the mob, too.
