alright when i get my starter out if it truly is bad... Can i replace the brushes myself? I looked at autozone and they didnt have any for our starter but ive heard taht they are pretty generic and you can make brushes fit from other cars...

is this a possibility? I dont want to spend the 100$ it is for a new one..

if i cant rebuild it myself then ill try to have a starter place rebuild it.

When I asked Curt Aigner at Elmhurst Toyota, he said starter rebuild kits were only available for MKIV's and that it is cheaper to buy a remanufactured starter than to rebuild it yourself. Keep in mind that this is the dealership talking, but he's usually a reliable source of information:

28140-15090 brush holder assy with 2 out of the 4 brushes list 45.96 cost 33.98
28120-15090 starter motor body with the field windings and the other 2 brushes out of 4 list 252.19 cost 186.48

IN this case it is cheaper to buy a reman starter.

28100-45050-84 STARTER,Reman list 129.86 cost 95.04
add 30.00 core charge [ refundable]

Now, you MAY be able to get creative by replacing the second pair of brushes, but I was able to get a remanufactured one from NAPA for $60 + a core charge, and it even came with a warranty.

most toyota starters use the same brushes. When i had to change mine i grab some from another toyota starter and swapped them. It's not that hard to do, and it takes less than 5mins after u take off the starter. It was free for me, since i work at a garage with plenty of little things like that. And don't worry, the used ones that i put in there have lasted more than a year so far with no problems. If i was you, i would just buy the brushes if they are available and do it yourself. A shop is going to charge you an arm and a leg to do this work.

Id think its more common for the rotor or stator to go rather than the brushes... are the brushes worn all the way down? Are there breaks in the wire to the brushes? Theres a few different check points inside of a starter if/when you take it apart ( easier than it sounds). If you want to know more let me know and ill post up some info.
