Speedo issues yet again!

Ok so I just replaced my speedo cables about a month ago with Toyota cables and well something broke again! Watched the needle fall while I was slowing down....it made no noise, no jumpy needle, no signs of issues at all! What would make a bran new cable break in less than 2 months driving? Has anyone else had a problem like this? Could something be wrong with my speedo itself?

The first time it broke, the tripometer(sp) was at 889...this time it broke at exactly 0000..

Also I didn't lube the new cable as it looked to be greased from the factory already...was I supposed to lube a new cable even more before install?

I'm just kinda confused and pissed as inspection is soon and now I gotta sped even more money:-(

Check the gear in the trans, shouldn't have to lube new cables so I doubt it's that.

That's what I was thinking! I did indeed think about lubing it but it had globs of grease at the cable ends...I'll be under the car tonight

Check the cable near the downpipe for a melted section.

Ahhh...just checking. I had my speedo cable melt as described...when it cooled off, it snapped.

yeah nothing on the speedo side moves....i couldnt get under the car lastnight cause i forgot my tools at the garage where i was helping iwantmkiii.

You did clip the head into the sheet metal behind the cluster when you fitted the new cable? (green plastic clip thing)

Yup everything snaps into place....even bought that white plastic thing but didn't need it!

I'm gonna unscrew the cables and see if it's the long or short section...the short broke last time but I still replaced both cables...hope it's the short one again but still want to figure out why!

From memory there's some funky routing under the dash with a spring steel clip but I can't see a new cable failing this quickly even if you wrapped it around the steering column

I know for sure I'm not near the steering column! I though trying to get the cable to go threw the firewall was tuff I could have hurt it....but again I didn't visibly break anything and the speedo worked fine till this past sat... I'm wondering if my lightweight fw and ds are playing a part in this as I do drive hard pretty often and with lightweight stuff my car speeds up and slows down really quickly threw 1st and 2nd....the needle dropped as soon as I pushed in the clutch so maybe city stop and go with the jerking you get from lightened components are stressing the cable?

Back when I had a cable never had any drama's like that, if you'd kinked the cable during the install you'd have had the bouncy needle.

Needle op was smooth as could be! Like a bird shitting in mid flight...no warning just fell!

Didn't tweak the plastic toothpick on the cluster end of the cable while fitting?

Definetly could have I'm sure but that plastic is very flexable when new! It's very hard to line up the cluster just perfect....although I never forced it in and I'd rearrage if I felt the slightest resistace....definetly possible that I broke the plastic needle but I have a bit more faith in myself to think I broke it.
