I got a question for the military people.

is it true that if you join the service with a degree you become an officer?

No, you have to have a degree to be an officer, but you also have to go through a commissioning source to be an officer

But if you have a degree and enlist I think you go in as an E-3 ... plus or minus a rank

Edit: Missing word made the first sentence read a little funny

That I do not know... usually the school you go to will have a list that you can check out or you could drop by the career center and they'd be able to tell you... other than that I haven't a clue

well whats the highest rank itll get me?

Advanced Enlistment Rank. All of the services offer advanced enlistment rank for recruits with a certain number of college credits, or for participation in other programs, such as Junior ROTC in high school.

* The Army offers advanced enlistment rank up to E-4 for college, and up to E-2 for other programs (such as JROTC). The Army also offers accelerated promotion to recruits with certain civilian-aquired job training or skills, through the Army Civilian Aquired Skills Program (ACASP).

* The Air Force offers advanced enlistment rank up to E-3 for college and participation in other programs. The Air Force is the only service which offers accelerated promotion for six-year enlistees.

* The Navy offers advanced enlistment rank up to E-3 for college and participation in other programs. The Navy also offers accelerated promotion up to E-4 for individuals who enlist in certain designated enlistment programs (Such as the Nuclear Field).

* The Marine Corps offers advanced enlistment rank up to E-2 for college and participation in other programs.

* The Coast Guard gives advanced rank up to E-2 for college and up to E-3 for other programs.

With the exception of the Air Force six-year enlistee advance rank program, recruits who join with advanced rank are paid the rate of base pay for that advanced rank right from the first day of active duty. However, in most of the services, recruits do not get to actually wear the rank until they graduate from basic training (in basic, everyone is treated the same -- ie, just lower than whale droppings).

For Air Force six-year enlistees, they enlist and go through basic as an E-1 (or E-2 if they were qualified, such as college credits) and are then promoted to E-3 20 weeks following basic training graduation, or when they graduate technical school (job training), whichever occurs first. Date of Rank as an E-3 is then back-dated to the date of basic training graduation. Airmen don't receive "back-pay" for this, but the earlier date-of-rank makes them eligible for E-4 earlier.

As with other enlistment incentives, advanced enlistment rank must be included on your enlistment contract.

I don't know as much about the enlisted side of things as the officer side, only what we get briefed on and what I've found out through some old friends so some of this stuff may be a little dated... but it gives you an idea

Well I went into to Air Force with just JROTC and I got E-3 off the bat. Now that I have one more year until I finish my BS in Computer Science (Military Science minor..woot woot), I am really considering going through OTS. Base salary is around $3100, don't have to pay for housing and utilities, free health insurance, cheap food on base, no tax on base.....

*going to look at OTS applications*

They've recently reduced the number of commissionees that'll come out of OTS yearly and the competition is pretty damn fierce for those submitting applications. You should've gone ROTC (especially with military science minor... I'm getting a minor in aerospace studies through ROTC, heh) if you were at a university, heh... but good luck to you if you decide to go for it! I know one guy that's waiting for the August board results to come out and another guy that's applying for the next non-rated board

one last thing, check out www.airforceots.com if you run into problems with the application or have questions. It's a good site (much like here) for all kinds of info on OTS from those that've gone through it

BBOY, just to let you know I was headed this way and found out that this isn't a very stable job field, there is little to no job security with this type of field right now. Your better off picking up a Comp. Sci degree.

True, or just go with a computer engineering degree. You'd be a lot more flexible when it came to working in the engineering career field with an engineering degree over engineering technology degree.

Although my dad did Electrical Engineering Tech and he's sitting pretty right now (makes quite a bit of money)... but he doesn't engineer, he manages engineers, he got his MBA when he was in the military... and the MBA coupled with the Engineering Technology degree = winning combo.

So it all depends on what your overall plan is I guess
