Smoke when ACIS valve opens?

As many of you know, I have an 86.5 N/A. This evening, while on the freeway, I was being tailed by some moron with his high beams on. I was cruising 80 in 5th. I dropped it to 4th and hammered it. As soon as the air valve for the ACIS opened up (VTEC just kicked in, yo!) I saw a FAT cloud of smoke POUR from the tailpipe.

I just put in a used engine, and while the head was off I checked the cylinders/rings. Everything was okay, so I kept the engine and did the head.

I'm scratching my head about this one. You would think the system would go lean when the ACIS valve opened. Doesn't seem to make much sense to me. Anyone else ever seen this before?

My car's running very rich and when it was being dyno'd there was so much black smoke that I almost freaked. My AFRs were between 11.3 and 11.7 after 3700RPM. Started going rich at about 3200.

quick question how long has your "new engine" been in. Appx. how many times have you "jumped on it". Lastly did your old engine burn oil or anything under acceration. My new jdm did this when i did my motor swap, but it was just build upin the exaust and it clearedup after about a week or so. It was really bad the first two days, soon as i went WOT i got major james bond smoke

A puff of smoke from any car when your at WOT is normal. Especially an older one, that is not as lean.

Engine's been in for ~2900 miles. I've run it pretty hard a few times since the 1500 mile mark. The old engine burned oil due to a bad piston ring. Maybe this is junk in the exhaust, wut why only when the ACIS valve opens? :1zhelp:

If it's blowing out old build up then it's probably not seeing sufficient mass and air velocity until that point. Although I wouldn't discount the possibility that you're running rich either... probably a combination of the two.

What makes you think it happens when the IAC valve opens in the manifold? The smoke is only at 4200 RPM?

i dont think it has anything to do with the IAC valve. its just your "getting on it" and at higher rpm's it smokes. my car does it, most do.

unless its an insane amount of smoke. then you have other problems.

The smoke stays after 4200, all the way to redline? And at part throttle, or with your foot on the floor, all the same?

Actually, I believe it's only when it first kicks on. Here's a good example:

Been cruising at about 75 for a while. I decide to drop the hammer. Downshift to 4th and fly. Big puff of smoke at first, then very little...

That is perfectly normal.
