Shelf Life of Toyota Red Coolant?

It's time for me to flush and change my coolant and I have three bottles of unopened toyota red coolant that I've had in storage for about 5 years. Does anyone know if this coolant is still good (being sealed)?

Sealed I'd imagine a VERY long time but this is only a guess JJock or JDub might know for sure.

Sealed or open, the shelf life of the stuff is years.

In the engine, is another matter. I change mine at least once a year as a matter of course, so the stuff I have on the shelf never lasts that long.

I would use it.


Just a thought, mix it and test it with a refractometer. Although they don't test for the inhibitors and what not.

Coolant shelf life varies, but those that contain silicates are the shortest lived. These are good for 18-24 months. Toyota Red (fortunately) does not contain silicates:

Which brings us to Toyota's coolant. During the 80/90s Toyota Red was an IAT conventional coolant containing phosphate as the inorganic inhibitor. It avoided silicates altogether. Phosphates are fast acting (but still short lived) and work well on aluminum. These days Toyota Red is an HOAT long-life using sodium benzoate as the organic and potassium hydroxide (KOH) as the inorganic.

HOAT coolants like Toyota Red and Zyrex G-05 have a much longer shelf life...5-8 years if stored properly.
